Allowing commercial vehicle officers to join the state patrol.


    AN ACT Relating to the powers and duties of commercial vehicle enforcement officers and commercial vehicle officers; and adding a new section to chapter 43.43 RCW.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:

 

    NEW SECTION.  Sec. 1.  A new section is added to chapter 43.43 RCW to read as follows:

    The powers and duties of the commercial vehicle enforcement officers and commercial vehicle officers are to enforce state and federal laws and regulations relating to motor transport carriers and other related statutes and regulations as directed by law.  Commercial vehicle enforcement officers and commercial vehicle officers may provide medical assistance and to direct traffic in situations where the officers can be of assistance.  During the 1999 fiscal year, existing commercial vehicle enforcement officers have the option of making a transition from civil service employees to commissioned Washington state patrol officers.  The transition and commissioning of the officers must be completed by June 30, 1999.  Upon the date of commissioning, a commercial vehicle enforcement officer is eligible to participate in the Washington state patrol's retirement plan.  The commercial vehicle enforcement officers also have the option of transferring their service credit and contributions from the public employees' retirement system to the Washington state patrol retirement system.  The state patrol shall provide the training necessary to ensure the safety and success of the officers in the above-assigned duties.
