Background:

The office of archeology and historic preservation was created in 1983.  The state preservation officer, who is appointed by the governor appointed, with the consent of the senate, supervises the office.  Among other authorities, the state preservation officer: (1) Establishes and maintains a state register of sites, buildings, structures and objects that were significant in the state=s history, archeology, and culture; and (2) establishes a matching grants-in-aid program to preserve significant historical, architectural, and cultural properties.

The office of archeology and historic preservation was combined with other agencies in 1986 to be part of the newly created department of community development.  This office was retained as part of the department of community, trade, and economic development in 1995 when the department of community development and department of trade and economic development were combined.

The operating budget for the 1999-01 biennium created a task force on archeology and historic preservation, and appropriated $20,000 for this task force, to recommend the location of the office of archeology and historic preservation within state government.  This task force was directed to make its recommendations to the governor and appropriate legislative committees by January 1, 2000.
