SB 5523
As of February 9 1999
Title: An act relating to fireworks.
Brief Description: Eliminating materials for use on temporary fireworks stands.
Sponsors: Senators Prentice, Costa, Heavey and Gardner.
Brief History:
Committee Activity: Commerce, Trade, Housing & Financial Institutions: 2/9/99.
SENATE COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE, TRADE, HOUSING & FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS
Staff: Catherine Mele (786-7470)
Background: The Chief of the Washington State Patrol through the director of fire protection sets uniform standards for retail fireworks stands. All cities and counties that allow fireworks sales must comply with these standards. Concerns exist that some of the current fireworks standards are lenient and could result in harm to the public. Specifically, there are concerns about whether or not tents should be used for temporary fireworks stands and whether temporary or permanent fireworks stands should allow customers to enter.
Summary of Bill: The director of fire protection sets minimum statewide standards for retail fireworks stands. Tents, canopies, and temporary membrane materials may not be used for temporary fireworks stands. Customers may not enter temporary or permanent fireworks stands.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Not requested.
Effective Date: The bill takes effect on June 1, 1999.
