Background:
Diabetes is a medical condition which, if left untreated, can lead to serious damage to an individual. If law enforcement or correctional personnel are not trained to recognize and respond appropriately to the health needs of a diabetic in their custody or control, the individual=s health can be jeopardized.
Summary of Bill:
The Criminal Justice Training Commission, the Department of Health, the Board on Law Enforcement Training Standards and Education, and the Board of Correctional Training Standards and Education are required to develop a curriculum for the understanding of the medical and physical manifestations of diabetes by law enforcement and correctional personnel. The curriculum must be developed by December 1, 2002.

Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
