Background:  On September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center was attacked and many of the fire fighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical technicians who responded to the attack lost their lives.  Each year the United States loses approximately 100 men and women in fire service in the line of duty.

The first week of October is National Fire Prevention Week and the National Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation sponsors an official national tribute to all fire fighters who died in the line of duty.

Summary of Substitute Bill:  The Washington State Legislature requests that an annual day of national recognition for fire fighters, emergency medical service technicians and law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty be established by Congress to coincide with the National Fire Prevention Week of each year.

Substitute Bill Compared to Original Bill:  Law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty are also annually recognized.
