HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 2002-4744, by Representatives Santos, Tokuda and Quall

 

     WHEREAS, The Ranier Beach high school boys' basketball team captured the state basketball title when the Vikings convincingly defeated Mercer Island in a 67-51 victory; and

     WHEREAS, The Vikings have 3 State Championships in 1988, 1998, and now in 2002; and

     WHEREAS, Ranier Beach also defeated nationally ranked opponents from Los Angeles and New York; and

     WHEREAS, Ranier Beach was ranked No. 9 in the nation by USA Today and is expected to move into the top 5; and

     WHEREAS, Ranier Beach has consecutively won 4 Sea-King District Championships and 4 of the last 5 Metro League City Championships; and

     WHEREAS, The four seniors on the team have been offered college scholarships, including Nate Robinson who will play football and basketball at the University of Washington and Kenny Williams who will play football and basketball at Western Washington University; and

     WHEREAS, Three players were named to State All Tournament, along with Rodrick and Lodrick Stewart; and

     WHEREAS, Since 1994 when Mike Bethea became head coach, the Viking's win/loss record is 185-45; and

     WHEREAS, The team has gone to the state playoffs every year in the past five years finishing first place in 1998, seventh place in 1999, third place in 2000, second place in 2001, and first in 2002;

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the State of Washington recognize the Ranier Beach High School Vikings along with coach Mike Bethea for their outstanding season and championship basketball title; and

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be immediately transmitted by the Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives to the coaching staff and administration at Ranier Beach High School.
