Background: Commercial bottom trawling for food fish and shellfish is currently prohibited in Hood Canal and in all waters south and east of Whidbey Island. Bottom trawl gear is defined by Department of Fish and Wildlife rule as a cone or funnel-shaped net which is towed through the water, in which some part of the net contacts the seabed.
Summary of Bill: The ban on bottom trawling is extended to all waters of Puget Sound east of Port Angeles.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Not requested.
Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
