Background: Under current practice, the Washington Transportation Commission is responsible for naming state transportation facilities. Community support is measured, historically, through a memorial adopted by the Legislature.

Summary of Bill: The Legislature requests that the Washington Transportation Commission name the 172nd Street overpass of Interstate 5 in the City of Arlington the "Oliver 'Punks' Smith Interchange."

The memorial recognizes the contributions Oliver 'Punks' Smith has made to his community and his country in many ways, including volunteer firefighter, City Council member, member of the Transportation Relief Action Plan (TRAP), and serving in the United States Army. The work of TRAP helped secure funding for improvements at Interstate 5 and 172nd Street.
