TO THE HONORABLE DIRK KEMPTHORNE, SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR, AND TO
MARY BOMAR, DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, AND TO CHRIS
GREGOIRE, GOVERNOR, AND TO REX DERR, DIRECTOR OF STATE PARKS:
We, your Memorialists, the Senate and the House of Representatives
of the State of Washington, in legislative session assembled,
respectfully represent and petition as follows:
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds was born on December 11, 1927, in Dillon,
Montana; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds moved with his family to Monroe, Washington
while he was still in high school; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds served honorably in the United States Navy
from 1946 to 1947; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds graduated from Everett Junior College in 1950
and then owned and operated a gas station in Monroe for four years; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds earned his law degree from Gonzaga University
in 1958; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds was elected Snohomish County prosecutor in
1962 where he served before winning election to Congress in 1964; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds served as a distinguished member of the United
States House of Representatives from 1965 to 1979; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds represented the Second Congressional District
of Washington as a Democrat; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds served on the House Interior and Insular
Affairs Committee as well as the Labor and Education Committee; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds was well known for his diligent work on
conservation and education issues; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds helped create the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area
and the North Cascades National Park; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds retired from the United States House of
Representatives to return to practicing law in 1979; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds died at his Church Creek, Maryland home on
August 17, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Lloyd Meeds devoted his life to his wife of more than 35
years, Mary, and his three children and eight grandchildren;
NOW, THEREFORE, Your Memorialists respectfully pray that the United
States Department of the Interior commence proceedings to dedicate a
portal facility at the Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area in honor of Lloyd
Meeds.
BE IT RESOLVED, That copies of this Memorial be immediately
transmitted to the Honorable Dirk Kempthorne, Secretary of the
Interior, Mary Bomar, Director of the National Park Service, to Chris
Gregoire, Governor, and to Rex Derr, Director of State Parks.
