WHEREAS, Alexander Jonlin, a student at Washington Middle School in
Seattle, has achieved national recognition for his exemplary volunteer
service by receiving a 2007 Prudential Spirit of Community Award; and
WHEREAS, This prestigious award, presented by Prudential Financial
in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School
Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have
demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to their communities; and
WHEREAS, At age 11, Alex vigorously pursued his idea of a State
Office of Children's Opinions by collecting over 400 petition
signatures and employing the help of his legislator, Senator Ken
Jacobsen of the 46th Legislative District, to introduce a bill; and
WHEREAS, Alex successfully lobbied the 2005 Legislature to create
the Washington State Legislative Youth Advisory Council, the means by
which the youth of Washington State have a voice in government; and
WHEREAS, Being yet excluded from membership in the Council because
of his age, he returned to Olympia the following session to change the
age requirement and sunset clause, while also contributing as an
honorary member of the Council; and
WHEREAS, Alex has demonstrated the persistence, courage, and
confidence of someone well beyond his years, and his extraordinary
leadership has blazed a trail for the youth of Washington State;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Washington State Senate
recognize and thank Alex Jonlin for his dedication, perseverance, and
continued service to Washington State; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be
immediately transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to Alex Jonlin,
the Legislative Youth Advisory Council, and Washington Middle School.
