Background:
It is unlawful to possess, deliver, or dispense a legend drug or controlled substance except pursuant to a prescription issued by health care professionals with prescriptive authority who are licensed in Washington; e.g., Physicians, Dentists, and Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners. Additionally, the following professionals from other states have prescriptive authority in Washington:
Physicians;
Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons;
Dentists;
Podiatric Physicians and Surgeons; and
Veterinarians.
In 2010 the Legislature granted prescriptive authority to Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners from other states. This authority extended only to legend drugs, not controlled substances

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners from other states are granted prescriptive authority over controlled substances in Washington.

Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session in which the bill is passed.
