Background: The Washington Manufacturing Innovation and Modernization Extension Service program (program) was created in 2008. Under the program, small manufacturers, industry associations, or cluster associations may receive vouchers of up to $200,000 per year to cover the costs of manufacturing extension services. Such services are to be provided by a qualified manufacturing extension partnership affiliate such as Impact Washington. The costs of the manufacturing extension services must be repaid.
The Department of Commerce administers the program. The program terminates in 2012.
Summary of Bill: The termination provisions for the program are repealed.
Appropriation: None.
Fiscal Note: Available.
Committee/Commission/Task Force Created: No.
Effective Date: Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
Staff Summary of Public Testimony: PRO: We are trying to re-build our manufacturing sector. This bill will help. Impact Washington has worked with 1300 manufacturers over the 12 years of its existence. This program helps firms that don't have a lot of cash. The administration of the program has taken some time to work out with the Department of Commerce. This is a positive program that will be a long-term success.
Persons Testifying: PRO: Senator Chase; John Vicklund, Impact Washington.
