Background:
A number of days are recognized in Washington without being considered legal holidays:
January 13 is recognized as Korean-American day;
October 12 is recognized as Columbus day;
April 9 is recognized as former prisoner of war recognition day;
January 26 is recognized as Washington army and air national guard day;
August 7 is recognized as purple heart recipient recognition day;
The second Sunday in October is recognized as Washington state children's day;
April 16th is recognized as Mother Joseph day;
September 4 as Marcus Whitman day;
December 7 is recognized as Pearl Harbor remembrance day;
July 27 is recognized as national Korean war veterans armistice day;
February 19 is recognized as civil liberties day of remembrance; and
June 19 is recognized as Juneteenth, a day of remembrance for the day the slaves learned of their freedom.
July 25 is recognized worldwide as Patient Safety Day and in 2011, Governor Gregoire proclaimed July 25 as Patient Safety Day in the state of Washington. The purpose of Patient Safety Day is to commemorate patients who have suffered from preventable medical errors, to honor people striving to improve medical safety, and to raise awareness about the importance of medical safety.
Summary of Bill:
The Legislature declares July 25 as Patient Safety Day, but is not considered a legal holiday. The purpose of the designation is to raise awareness of the importance of patient safety in the health care delivery system by commemorating patients harmed by preventable medical errors and recognizing individuals committed to improving patient safety in the health care delivery system.

Effective Date: The bill takes effect 90 days after adjournment of the session in which the bill is passed.
