Background: No Child Left Behind. The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires that states receiving federal funds provide military recruiters the same access to high school students that they provide to postsecondary institutions or prospective employers.
Job Corps, Peace Corps, and AmeriCorps. Job Corps is a free education and training program operated by the United States Department of Labor that helps young people learn a career, earn a high school diploma or General Educational Development certification, and find a job. The Peace Corps is an agency of the federal government that runs a volunteer program with a mission to provide technical assistance to developing regions, help people outside the United States understand American culture, and help Americans understand the cultures of other countries. AmeriCorps is also a federal program that provides adults with community service work with the goal of helping others and meeting critical needs in the community.
Summary of Bill: School district boards of directors must provide access to campuses and the student information directory for official recruiting representatives of the Job Corps, Peace Corps, and AmeriCorps if that access is granted to persons or groups that make students aware of postsecondary occupational or educational options.
The access, including number of days and type of presentation space, provided to official recruiting representatives of the Job Corps, Peace Corps, and AmeriCorps, must be equal to and no less than access provided to other postsecondary occupational or educational representatives.
