BACKGROUND:

A person's name may be placed on a mailing list or telephone directory other than that distributed by a regulated telephone company.  This may lead to unsolicited telephone calls, mailings, or even visits.  These unsolicited communications can be burdensome, inconvenient, or possibly even dangerous.  Not having one's name on such lists can lessen risks and inconvenience.

SUMMARY:

Upon receipt of written requests, a person selling mailing lists or telephone directories shall delete all information regarding a person or persons from his or her listings.  A person soliciting information for listings shall make full disclosure of his or her purposes and the rights of the person being solicited. Also, symbols and statements that suggest another organization or a government agency may not be used.  Provisions for non- compliance are included.

House Committee - Testimony For:    The legislation is principally aimed at the Polk directories which seek information for the "City Directory".  Moreover, that firm is very difficult to reach to seek to have one's name removed from a listing.
