BACKGROUND:

Retired teachers entitled to retirement benefits under the Teachers' Retirement System may teach up to seventy-five days in the Washington public schools without having their pension benefits reduced.

SUMMARY:

Retired teachers would be allowed to increase the number of days they may teach without a reduction in pension benefits from seventy-five to ninety days per school year.

House Committee - Testimony For:     It is important that school districts have the option of utilizing the experience of retired teachers to meet emergency hiring needs of a district.  These occur most frequently when a teacher becomes ill or it is impossible to continue to offer parts of a program because a person with the necessary training cannot be found.  Retired teachers can fill these gaps and should not suffer a reduction in benefits.
