AS REPORTED BY COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS
FEBRUARY 26, 1988
BACKGROUND:
The Washington State Ecological Commission annually presents environmental excellence awards to individuals, organizations, and businesses who have contributed to the protection of Washington's environment. In 1987, new legislation directed the Department of Ecology to establish an environmental excellence awards program recognizing environmentally-protective product labelling.
Problems associated with traditional solid waste disposal methods have placed increased emphasis on alternatives such as waste reduction and recycling. Waste reduction and recycling are solid waste management priorities adopted by the legislature.
SUMMARY:
The Department of Ecology is directed to establish an additional environmental excellence awards program that recognizes achievements in solid waste reduction and recycling.
