AN ACT Relating to community service by high school students; and adding a new section to chapter 28A.05 RCW.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. A new section is added to chapter 28A.05 RCW to read as follows:
(1) The legislature finds that a sense of community is an effective means of achieving economic growth and equity and that schools can positively contribute to building a sense of community and common purpose within its students to prepare them to function politically, economically, and socially in a democratic society.
(2) School districts are encouraged to develop a community service requirement as a prerequisite to high school graduation.
(3) The superintendent of public instruction and the department of community development shall, within available resources, provide technical support to school districts seeking to develop or who have developed a community service graduation requirement.
