AN ACT Relating to smoking in schools; adding a new section to chapter 28A.87 RCW; creating a new section; and providing an effective date.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON:
NEW SECTION. Sec. 1. The legislature recognizes that the use of tobacco is a serious health hazard for all persons, and is often a habit formed early in life. For this reason, the legislature intends to create a smoke-free environment in all public schools in this state.
NEW SECTION. Sec. 2. A new section is added to chapter 28A.87 RCW to read as follows:
No school district board of directors shall allow any student to smoke or otherwise use tobacco or tobacco products on the grounds of any common school, whether inside or outside a building.
NEW SECTION. Sec. 3. To allow students the opportunity to quit smoking or tobacco use, this act shall take effect September 1, 1988.
