State of Washington 50th Legislature 1988 Regular Session

WHEREAS, The Governor of the State of Washington has published the Washington economic development agenda which lays out strategies for: Improving education and human resources systems; improving the state's business climate; redeveloping distressed areas; retaining and expanding existing industries; assisting resource-based industries; encouraging formation and expansion of small business; improving the state's businesses as a center for international trade, finance, research, and tourism; preserving the state's natural environment; promoting the development of research-based industries; and working to build the capacity of local interest to conduct economic development activities; and
WHEREAS, A comprehensive, balanced, integrated, intermodal state-wide transportation system is vital to the economic development of the state; and
WHEREAS, Many of the economic agendas for the years 2000 to 2020 that are being developed and published around the state do not adequately address transportation; and
WHEREAS, The department of transportation has an aggressive program underway to develop internal policies to support the many public and private economic development initiatives and to foster better cooperation among state agencies, local governments, private business and interest groups, and the general public;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring, That it is the intent of the Legislature that the Department of Trade and Economic Development, the Department of Community Development, and other agencies or organizations that are involved in economic development shall establish processes in coordination with the Department of Transportation that will ensure that the vital component of transportation be included as a major element in policy development; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That it is the intent of the Legislature that the Washington State Economic Development Board shall include consideration of future transportation policy in its final report to the Legislature.
