State of Washington 50th Legislature 1988 Regular Session

WHEREAS, Anorexia nervosa ("starvation sickness") and bulimia ("binge-purge syndrome") are emotional disorders that can lead to serious physical illness and even death; and
WHEREAS, Experts estimate that one out of every one hundred women between the ages of twelve and twenty-five suffer from anorexia nervosa, that one out of every seven women in that age group develops bulimia, and that nearly ten percent of all patients who are referred to eating disorder clinics are male; and
WHEREAS, Recently there has been a dramatic increase in the number of reported cases of anorexia nervosa and bulimia, and the need to provide effective treatment to the victims of these disorders is thus greater than ever; and
WHEREAS, Public awareness about the personal and familial tragedies caused by anorexia nervosa and bulimia must be raised in order to promote continued research into the causes and treatments of these and other eating disorders;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, By the House of Representatives of the State of Washington, the Senate concurring, That the week of April 24, 1988 through April 30, 1988, is designated as "Washington State Eating Disorders Awareness Week," and the Governor is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the State of Washington to observe that week with appropriate programs and activities.
