INTRODUCTION OF SPECIAL GUESTS
The President welcomed and introduced local participants in the National Day of Silence from Olympia area schools and representatives of the Safe Schools Coalition who were present in the gallery and recognized by the senate.
INTRODUCTION OF SPECIAL GUESTS
The President welcomed and introduced Miss Alex Hanesworth, a junior at Anacortes High School, Skagit County, the 2015 State Poetry Out Loud contest champion and Miss Gabriella Sipe, a senior at Olympia High School, Thurston County, who was named runner up. Coordinated by the Arts Commission, Poetry Out Loud is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation and involved more than 22,000 students at the classroom level throughout Washington. The state competition took place on March 7 at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts in Tacoma on March 7. The Poetry Out Loud national recitation will be held April 28-29, 2015 in Washington, D.C., where 53 high school student state champions will compete for the title of national champion and a $20,000 prize.
PERSONAL PRIVILEGE
Senator Ranker: “I want to congratulate Alex and her mother Marilyn, who is also here today, for your accomplishments. To compete against 22,000 people and to win is just remarkable. You have made, obviously, your mother but also the City of Anacortes, everybody in northern Washington State and the entire state of Washington, extremely proud. Congratulations to you and we look forward to you bringing home the next national championship and we’ll here about that later this month. Congratulations to you and your mother.”
PERSONAL PRIVILEGE
Senator Liias: “I wondered if I could read a short poem of celebration?”
REPLY BY THE PRESIDENT
President Owen: “I think it would be appropriate.”
PERSONAL PRIVILEGE
Senator Liias: “Thank you Mr. President. This is by Lucille Clifton. It’s entitled ‘Won’t you celebrate with me’.
‘won't you celebrate with me
what i have shaped into
a kind of life? i had no model.
born in babylon
both nonwhite and woman
what did i see to be except myself?
i made it up
here on this bridge between
starshine and clay,
my one hand holding tight
my other hand; come celebrate
with me that everyday
something has tried to kill me
and has failed.’
Congratulations”
PERSONAL PRIVILEGE
Senator Fraser: “Well thank you Mr. President. Well, I too am as proud as I can be that the runner up, the number two person out of 22,000 students is from Legislative District Twenty-two, which I represent. I am proud of her. I know our whole community is proud of her and the state is. Twenty-two thousand students participated and she came in number two and I compliment her and all the students who did very well in this competition. This is a really great program and I’d like to also compliment the State Arts Commission that runs it. This is a program that helps students develop appreciation for literature, which is so important in life, helps them build self-confidence and helps them to develop their public speaking skills. So, who knows if some of them will be on the floor reciting their own poetry one of these days? So, congratulations to all and also to the State of Washington because Washington State as a whole came in number three in the nation in student participation. This is outstanding for our state.”
PERSONAL PRIVILEGE
Senator McAuliffe: “Well, in speaking today [during the debate of Senate Resolution No. 8669] of Ana Cauce who is the University of Washington Chief – not Chief-of-Staff, as I misspoke.”
REPLY BY THE PRESIDENT
President Owen: “I believe she’s Chancellor.”
PERSONAL PRIVILEGE
Senator McAuliffe: “She is but they call her ‘Chief’ and that’s why I, but she is the Chancellor so I just wanted to correct myself.” [Dr. Cauce was the Interim President of the University of Washington, later named President.]
