POLICY STATEMENT
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH

The Office of Shellfish Programs has issued a new office policy, Policy
and Procedure Number 015, Classification of Commercial Shellfish Growing
Areas, effective January 9, 1997. The policy states that all commercial
shellfish areas must be classified as to their suitability for shellfish
harvesting in accordance with the National Shellfish Sanitation Program
Manual of Operations, Part I. The intent of this policy is to ensure
that shellfish areas approved for direct harvest are not subject to
contamination from human and/or animal fecal matter and/or poisonous or
deleterious substances in amounts that may present an actual or potential
hazard to public health.
